Appointment process for Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (designate) begins
The selection panel for the proposed new Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) has begun seeking applications for the role of Chief Commissioner (designate) and for the 14 Members (designate) of the Commission.
New legislation is being prepared by the Department of Justice, Defence and Equality to merge the Irish Human Rights Commission and the Equality Authority.
The Chief Commissioner role will be full time and for a period of five years.
The selection panel, whose appointment by Justice Minister Alan Shatter has been formally approved by the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality, will make recommendations to Government for approval by the Oireachtas and appointment by the President. The panel told the Committee last month that it would seek to recommend a highly qualified, balanced and effective Commission that would fully reflect the human rights and equality concerns and issues of modern Ireland.
The Chair of the panel, Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly said today, "We will be advertising these appointments as widely as possible to make sure that the greatest possible number of potential members, and a potential Chief Commissioner, will be fully aware of them."
The four other members of the selection panel are Professor Gerard Quinn and Dr Mary Keys of NUIG, Professor Gerry Whyte of Trinity College Dublin, and Ms Sylda Langford, Chair of the Citizens Information Board.
The Public Appointments Service (PAS) will assist with advertising and with taking in applications. All other steps of the process including shortlisting and interviews will be undertaken solely by the selection panel.
The selection panel has set up its own website, http://www.ihrecpanel.com and its own Twitter account, https://www.twitter.com/@IHRECPanel. Details of the positions and how to apply are also available on http://www.publicjobs.ie and will also appear in press advertising. Closing date for applications is November 29th next.
